Schedule and theme of classes:

31.01 Introductory class about 8 limbs, complex yoga practice The first class of our chakra course will have the basic concepts of the yogic philosophy of 8 limbs — steps of yoga. These concepts will be needed to understand the whole yoga course. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali refers to 8 limbs of yoga, each of which offers guidance on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. Learn about each one and how to incorporate them into your practice.

14.02 Yamas. Yoga practice working with intention YAMA – 5 moral disciplines or moral vows This first limb, Yama, refers to vows, disciplines or practices that are primarily concerned with the world around us, and our interaction with it. We’re going to work with attention and intention in practice to calm the mind and increase physical strength and flexibility.

28.02 Niyamas. Balances The second limb, Niyama, usually refers to duties directed towards ourselves, but can also be considered with our actions towards the outside world. The prefix ‘ni’ is a Sanskrit verb which means ‘inward’ or ‘within’. When we work with balances – we are guided from the grossest aspects of ourselves to the truth deep within.

14.03 Asanas. Intensive yoga practice Asana or posture — physical aspect of yoga is the third step on the path to freedom. It’s going to be a really good yoga workout, be ready!

28.03 Pranayama. Working with pranayamas - breathing techniques The word Prana refers to ‘energy’ or ‘life source’. It can be used to describe the very essence that keeps us alive, as well as the energy in the universe around us. Prana also often describes the breath, and by working with the way we breathe, we affect the mind in a very real way.

11.04 Pratyahara. Yoga practice with closed eyes Pratya means to ‘withdraw’, ‘draw in’ or ‘draw back’, and the second part ahara refers to anything we ‘take in’ by ourselves, such as the various sights, sounds and smells our senses take in continuously. We’ll focus on ‘drawing in’. The practice of drawing inward may include focussing on the way we’re breathing, we’re going to switch our senses ‘off’ through concentration in practice with closed eyes.

25.04 Dharana. Advanced poses. Dharana means ‘focused concentration’. Dha means ‘holding or maintaining’, and Ana means ‘other’ or ‘something else’. Closely linked to the previous two limbs; dharana and pratyahara are essential parts of the same aspect. We’ll focus on some advanced postures.

09.05 Dhyana. Yoga practice and meditation The seventh limb is ‘meditative absorption’ – when we become completely absorbed in the focus of our meditation, and this is when we’re really meditating.

23.05 Samadhi. Soft Yin Yoga + Yoga Nidra Samadhi has meaning ‘bliss’ or ‘enlightenment’, and this is the final step of the journey of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Breaking the word in half, we see that this final stage is made up of two words; ‘sama’ meaning ‘same’ or ‘equal’, and ‘dhi’ meaning ‘to see’. Reaching Samadhi is not about escapism, floating away or being abundantly joyful; it’s about realising the very life that lies in front of us.

30.05 Answer the questions. Complex yoga practice. It will be the last class with yoga practice and satsang. You’ll be able to ask Surinder some questions about the course and yoga in general.
